The enemy would like nothing less than to see you fail your fast. Your body will not act normally when you fast. There are side effects when you fast. Knowledge to some things that can occur can prevent you from fear and thinking you are not supposed to fast.
Some negatives that may happen when you fast
-
Headache ( first 10 days)
-
Backache/ kidney pain (day 3 to day 7)
-
White pasty tongue and bad breath ( first 15 days) Have Mints
-
fatigue (first 10 days)
-
Lightheadedness or dizziness (on and off the entire time)
-
Hunger (on and off the entire time)
-
Sleeplessness ( After 5 days)
-
Nausea (first 10 days)
-
loss of weight
You may have one of these, none, or many of them. Your body is working out toxins, so the first 10 days are the worst. I personally had the backache, Fatigue (first 5 days) pasty tongue, hunger first 3 days, Day 11, Day 20 and day 30. Mostly it was a desire to eat, not actual hunger. I did have sleeplessness after day 10. I had a burst of energy and did not need as much sleep. I would awake in the night and just use that time to pray. I was lightheaded occasionally.
Other things that may happen.
-
Some melancholy and grieving of your sin
-
Extra energy
-
Heightened senses ( physical as well as spiritual)
-
Glowing appearance
-
God to reveal himself in ways he never has before.
In our 40 day fast, God met with us in very special ways. Gifts came out that were not normally present. We also went through times of grief over our sin.

My son and I are on our very first long fast. He’s on day 27…I’m on day 7. I’m having lots of dizziness throughout the day and I’m exhausted by the afternoon. I’ve lost almost 13 lbs…and I look pretty good. Hopefully, I’ll be able to hang in there. My son has been asthma free since his first week. I’m hoping my arthritis will be gone by the end of this fast.
I have been fasting for ten days. It is just from food. I am praying for a stronger hunger for God and huge move of His spirit in my region. Plus personal strongholds in my life…I feel great but really light headed this site helped me….angi
Hello, I’m on day 2 of many attempts to a long term fast. The longest I have accomplished is 6 days. I hope to do 40 although it has been tough commiting. Please give me any good words of encouragement and support if pssible and reasons to keep going! It’s very hard. But I know my soul needs it. Thank You!
I am on day 5 of a 7 day fast, though I already feel God leading me toward a long term fast. Fasting is new to me, so even 7 days seemed like a huge commitment. But, already I am seeing God’s faithfulness during this time. I have struggled with fatigue and a pretty constant headache during the past 5 days – both other than that, I’ve done well. I had to share with someone that I was fasting on Day 3 (they were questioning why I wasn’t eating and was concerned about an eating disorder) and they were amazed at how good I looked. I praised God as a testimony of His provision! Thank you for putting this information out there, especially for those of us who are “beginning” fasters and might be afraid of some of the effects of fasting. It’s good to know that all that I’m experiencing is normal.
God Bless!
Greetings in The Name of our Lord & Savior Jesus, I’m on my 6th day of a 40 day fast. It’s been great! I’ve had a great time fellowshipping with the LORD! Amazing things had been happening, We was invited to my wife’s friend party and a gentlemen (who was drunk) noticed a glow on my face. He told me that he wanted to get out of his life of sin. Me & my Pastor are going to visit him tomorrow. Please pray for us! God get all of the Glory!!! Praise His Holy Name! Sincerely, Mark
